New Rockstar Catch-Can Install

So from the Z being so low, my stock coolant over-flow tank got warn down so much that it made a giant hole in the bottom and side.

So there needed to be a solution…ROCKSTAR CAN!!!!

Instructions;

Step 1: Grab a can… in this situation, i picked out the pink Rockstar can 🙂

Step 2: Open can, if you have someone else open it-make sure to shake it first.

Step 3: Enjoy the crap out of it…

Step 4: Back to work. Time to take off the wheel…

Step 5: Unscrew the three screws off the stock overflow tank and pull it out.

Step 6: With limited space under the hood of the Z, I couldn’t find space to even fit a can in there. So I figured I would have to put it where the original overflow tank was. I unscrewed this thing i circled to have a place to mount a bracket. (Bracket is the picture below-I just used a dash gauge mount.)

Step 7: Put some double sided sticky tape (3m) on the back of the bracket, clean the little black tank that your going to stick it to, stick it on, and screw the bracket to the other bracket that holds the black thing.

Step 8: Secure Rockstar can and put the hose through the top of the can.

Whalahh!

I’m sure there are many ways to do this, this is just one of the ways.

Testing at Willow Springs Pictures

Two days ago I went up to Willow Springs to get some practice time with the new motor and steering rack spacer. I practiced a few large sweepers, but mainly wanted to work on the tighter technical stuff. Rathyna Gomer came up too a little bit later with her pretty white 350z to practice her drifting too! 🙂

The GoPro’s were there, and the video footage will be up soon, for now, here are a few screen shots as a preview to what the movie will be about….

A Few Pictures From This Weekend

This weekend at Cars and Coffee in Irvine was pretty cool, there were a lot of pretty high end cars, big trucks, and cool bikes.

This Mercedes SLS convertible’s hood was taller than me with my arms up!!

There was an appearance by this BEAUTIFUL Bugatti Veyron…

This Porsche was for sale for 31K! I would love this for a daily…

This super clean R33 Skyline showed up… I loved his license plate… I wonder how the cops around CA feel about it LOL

Jackie Tyner brought her Mini Cooper out! I love her offset!!!!

Gotta ❤ Fd’s! This one was a little rough around the edges, but the J-Spec front bumper is still the best one out there for these cars.

Lastly… this giant truck who rolled in about halfway through the morning, I wanted a picture on the tire… not realizing I would need a boost up there!

Z1 Solid Aluminum Motor and Transmission Mounts; Review

This write up is pretty short, because there is one main question everybody asks about the solid aluminum mounts…

Q; “How much does the car vibrate with the solid mounts?”

A; Its not as bad as you would think-

   On a scale of 1-10, one being the same as ‘OEM’ and 10 being ‘extreme vibrations’…

      -At idle there isn’t much difference between OE and Alum. (Scale rating-1)

     -Under normal acceleration you can tell the car seems more in tact, like an undercover race car. (Scale rating-2.5)

     -When you are accelerating fast..aka flooring it it’s solid, not crazy vibrations, but enough to make you a little giddy (Scale rating-7/8)

   -When drifting, it feels smooth while in motion but stiff, it was a little different initiating at first because you can really feel everything. (Scale rating-RACECAR)

Things that I wasn’t expecting before these were installed-

          The biggest unexpected difference was the noise. It transformed the inside of the car to sound like a cockpit of a racecar. It was noticeably louder as if I had swapped exhaust.

         The engine sounds echo’d quite a bit more also, I thought something was mechanically wrong at first. All the noises that I was used to before weren’t the same. Since the vibrations used to get absorbed into the rubber engine mounts, it would mask the noise. Now that that vibration has no where else to go you can really hear it…it’s awesome.

        The solid transmission mounts made shifting feel sturdier also, more precise than before.

Recommendations;

I WOULD recommend the solid motor and transmission mounts to anyone that wants to stiffen up their Z, anyone that wants to really feel their car, and any Z enthusiast.

I WOULD NOT recommend these mounts if your looking for comfort and an ultra smooth ride… if thats what your looking for, get a Lexus.

Information from Z1 about these mounts;

Solid Aluminum Transmission mounts;

A direct replacement for the OEM Transmission mount found in both the Nissan 300zx and the 240sx, the Z1 Solid Aluminum Transmission Mount is THE LAST transmission mount your car will ever need!  Machined from 6061 Aluminum, the solid transmission mount will never sag, wear out, tear or rot.  By installing a solid aluminum transmission mount, 100% of the engine’s power/torque is channeled into the drivetrain and suspension.  This equates to improved performance on both on and off the track.

Weight Comparison:
Z1 Solid Aluminum Transmissino Mount = 1.25 lbs!!
OEM Nissan Transmission Mount = 5.50 lbs

She Goes Blue…

I’ll have a little write up soon about this last month and what it took to get this motor in-the up’s and downs, but for now, here’s a quick little photo shoot we did today on Coronado in San Diego to show off the new paint…

Laguna Seca Blue with an aqua flake. This is my 300ZX…

Update on blown motor; Full unveiling soon!

As many of you know, my motor blew drifting at Irwindale during a Sideways Sunday event about a month or so back. We’ve been working hard to get a new motor and everything needed for the swap.
Finding the motor, having parts over nighted and pulling an all nighter to get it done, and the motor is still out of the car, the new goal is to have it finished by the 15th of October.
While we wait for the new parts to come in from Z1 Motorsports we are sanding the intake plenum and misc. parts around the motor and wheels to prep to paint and make pretty 🙂
LTBMW did a great job with the paint of the exterior of the car, the full unveiling I’ll have up soon.
